Hi Jen,
I think the answer to this will be in what protocols the devices you mention talk. I know on some of these devices a communications module is optional and a good few of them use SECII / GEM protocols.
If you can identify a protocol there is almost certainly an OPC Server out there which will alow communication with it and from there it would be possible to use a PI OPCDA client to take the information into PI. If there isn't an immediate OPC server available, it should be possible to put one together with the tools available from Kepware, Software Toolbox or Matrikon.

Thank you Burnikell1!
I just have another concern. Given for example that an instrument uses RS-232 does it guarantee me that it can communicate with PI System? Thank you very much for your time!
Respectfully, Jen

Hi Jen,
There is never a guarentee just differing degrees of confidence in achieving the connection. You will always need some form of interface to convert the data into a usable format and align it to a PI Tag. The PI Server itself will just deal in records so the interface needs to put the raw data in a format that PI can associate as being related to a tag record.
Just connecting an RS-232 device up to PI won't accomplish anything; PI will need to be able to convert the data being sent via RS-232 (assuming we're talking protocol and not electrical comms standard). I believe there are PI Interfaces that can do this (Message Logger?) but this would have to be purchased and configured in line with your instrumentation.
Alternatively you could always write your own utility but from a support and maintainability point of view purchasing from a vendor would always be my preferred way forward.
Regards,
Burnikell1
